As part of its second season, Modus is presenting the San Francisco premiere of Anne Bogart and the Saratoga International Theater Institute company in THE MEDIUM. Modus Ensemble's productions have included two works written and directed by artistic director Timothy O'Brien, "A Performance In Time" and "An Object Orientation" at Cowell Theater in 1994.
Modus approaches the process of exploration and discovery through the explosive possibilities inherent in ensemble work. By combining a strong emphasis on language, a highly visual, stylized aesthetic, and a commitment to the role of the actor, the company seeks to develop a raw yet poetic theater. By using an expressionistic aesthetic based on movement and gesture, the company is working to set free the inner emotion of the actors. In this way, the company strives to present highly imagistic works that provide insight and inspire audiences rather than perpetrate the more common cultural symptoms of alienation and fragmentation.
Since most life escapes the senses, Modus aspires to work through subtle yet richly textured patterns, rhythms, words, and images to help audiences identify the "invisible-made-visible" on stage. For both the actors and audience, this opportunity presents itself through dramatic experiences that can transcend everyday life and illuminate and articulate what in life is beyond words.
Still in its development phase, Modus is looking to build its company of actors, designers, and collaborators through the process of working together to create plays. Recognizing that funding is also an issue in the formation of an ensemble, Modus is supported in large part by a sister company, One Abstract, a commercial operation that provides creative and strategic work for computer companies.
